Eat cranberries to lose weight, fight cancer, ward off kidney stones, climb faster and feel healthier

As we head into spring many of us will come out of hibernation (or recovery from sickness) and begin cycling again.

If you've gained a bit of weight or you're looking for more energy to ride faster up hills a sure fire way to improve your fitness is to lose weight and to get more polyphenols, vitamins and nutrients in your diet that assist with recovery and blood oxygen transport.

In a sport where an eight kilogram bike is considered heavy losing only a few kilos can make a a significant difference to your speed.

We all know the tried and proven ways to lose weight; eat healthier, burn more carbs by exercising more, stress less (for most people this helps), eat less calories, don't eat carbs in the evening, drink less alcohol, drink weight loss drinks, consume less sugar and taking drugs like EPO (kidding).

But what if I told you there might be a new and easier way to lose weight, a way that very few people know about! Since reading about this superfood I have started eating it every day and I have to say that I have noticed the effects within a very short time.

World specialist in the health effects of berry fruits, Prof Desjardins presented the findings of his research in Brisbane last Thursday at the International Horticulture Congress.

He said clinical trials were currently being done to prove the effect in humans but a previous study of 30 overweight men given a cup of cranberry juice a day, found they lost about 1cm of waist girth.

“At the time we could not explain this effect, now we believe it stimulated their anti-obesity bacteria,” Prof Desjardins said. “...the point is, eat berries, they may modify positively your bacteria and you may lose weight.”

While it is not yet clear how much people would have to consume to get the most effective weight loss effects, Prof Desjardins said the amount of cranberry extract given to the mice was equivalent to about half a cup, possibly up to one full cup of berries each day. “So it’s easily reachable, it’s a reasonable amount,” said the Professor.

He said it is possible to get the benefit from both cranberry and blueberry juice but not from sugary apple juice (don't drink apple juice if you want to lose weight!). Doctor Desjardins said the compound found in cranberries could also decrease visceral obesity, improve insulin sensitivity and prevent metabolic endotoxemia.

“Our findings provide strong evidence that we can favour the development of a beneficial gut microbiota by consuming berry polyphenols and that these useful bacteria may improve metabolism in obese and type 2 diabetic patients.”

 Bladder health

10. Cranberries lead to improved bladder Health: Science says that PACs have a unique ability to cross link or attach to the lining of the bladder and urinary tract, thus inhibiting the attachment and growth of bacteria, including E. Coli, a common cause of urinary tract infections. This explains why cranberry juice has been used for hundreds of years in traditional medicine to promote resolution of and even reduce the frequency of bladder infections.

 Stomach Health

11. Stomach Health: Similarly, some stomach ulcers are related to the overgrowth of the bacteria Heliobacter pylori. PACs act similarly in the stomach lining by preventing the attachment of this bacteria and thus lowering the chances for its growth, which leads to symptoms such as burning and pain and ultimately ulceration of the stomach lining.
